ATTENTION A-Team advocates : In January, the United States House and Senate introduced companion bills to raise the minimum wage over time. The bills, H.R. 582 and S. 150, the Raise the Wage Act, include language that would eliminate Section 14(c) of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which would eviscerate opportunities for people with significant disabilities who enjoy and want to keep their jobs. If you have gotten a chance to make a comment on this, thank
you. If you haven’t yet we did some clarification on an effective
response from the A-team facilitators.
The recommendation was to keep it simple, positive and
personal. With forums like this, the number of responses is more
impactful than the length.
A-Team – 3 times
1. Subject Line (something to identify our group but not all the same-“A-team/Big Lake” would be good for our group)
sentence of comment (example: My name is ________ and I am member of the
A-Team. Our mission is to ensure people with disabilities have a full array of
choices for work, home and life.)
Closing of comment: Thank you, (name ____________
- Keep it to one or two sentences.
- “Thank you” for inviting public comment on
this important topic of employment choice. My (family member) or I am very
proud of my work at my CRP and want to be sure this continues. I do believe in
the choice of CIE too and its value within Wisconsin’s full array of services.
- *** Remember to keep your comment about the
importance of a full array and the dignity of employment. Confirm the
importance of Community Integrated Employment too.
- Be gracious and positive.
Our goal is to
get 20 replies from A-team Big Lake. Thanks for taking the time to do
On August 11, 2016 the Big Lake A-Team (includes Oshkosh, Neenah, Menasha, Omro, and Winneconne) is hosting an event for parents to meet their elected legislators. This will be a casual affair and you will not be asked to address the gathering or to participate in a panel discussion. We do ask that you join us, meet the parents of the A-Team, and join us in a brief reading by Laurel Mills.
Laurel Mills is an author, teacher and an editor. Much of her poetry has focused on her daughter who is developmentally disabled. Laurel’s description of Beth’s struggles and successes tell a story of sadness, frustration, perseverance, humor, and joy. I have had the privilege of hearing Laurel Mills, and I believe our parents and legislators are in for a memorable experience.
Please join us on Thursday, August 11 at 100 W. Fernau Avenue in Oshkosh. Dinner will be served at 5:00. At 5:45 two parents will share their stories about the challenges and successes they have experienced advocating for their adult children. The event will be concluded with Laurel Mills. I anticipate the event will be over by 6:30 p.m.
We look forward to hearing that you will attend. Please RSVP by email at email@example.com or call (920) 231-0870.
